Laurence Becker: Possibilities and limitations of thread-by-thread mending in the conservation of textile fabrics Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This study examines the possibilities and limitations of thread-by-thread mending, a method used the mending of torn canvas in painting conservation, to be applied to textile fabrics. The main theme will be the possible applications as well as the characteristics the joint should have. Old and new linen threads were used as a basis in the test mendings. The adhesive was a mixture of two acrylic resins (Lascaux 360 HV/498 HV). As there is no guideline for tex-tile conservation, the tested mendings were related to mendings using a mixture of stur-geon’s glue and wheat starch paste, a mixture recommended for the conservation of pain-tings. Both textile and non textile methods made an examination of the quality of the test mendings possible. With this method conclusions can be drawn as to the suitability of thread-by-thread mending for textiles.
