Abstract: This final thesis entitled “Examinations on the effects of flax and hemp fibres leading to biocide treatments” deals with the effects on flax and hemp fibres leading to biocide treatments.
The conservator frequently uses biocides to combat microbial attack on art and cultural assets.
The knowledge as well as the fundamental research on effects of biocides on materials commonly found at artworks do exist to a less degree.
By using various methods of investigation the effects of a select range of biocides on a flax and hemp tissue are analysed.
The interpretation of the results is based on the morphologic and macromolecular structure of the cellulosic fibres and on the physical and chemical properties of the fibre and tissue.
Apart from the macroscopic investigation, supported by using a spectroscopic photometer, and measuring the tensile strength and stress-strain of the tissues, also the examination of the intrinsic viscosity of the dissolved cellulose fibres indicated that every tested biocide leads to a degradation of the fibres.
This thesis provides a contribution to the topical research and is an orientation for the conservator using biocides on textile picture carrier consisting of cellulosic fibre materials.
