Overview:

Abstract: The subject of the thesis is long-term effect of different paint systems on historical triasic schilf-sandstone objects in Northern Germany. On two exemplary buildings, the town hall of Osnabrück and the church of St. Cosmas und Damian in Groß Düngen various tests were carried out to examine the conservation and restoration works done in 1980 and 1984.. These treatments were simulated on triasic schilf-sandstone models. The effects of different restoration materials (stone strengthener OH, silicate dispersion paint, Siloxane emulsion paint, water repellent treatment) on the hygric characteristics of triasic schilf-sandstones are examined by measuring the capillary water absorption, the rate of dying after water absorption from the back side and water vapour transmission. The measurements are carried out on models which went through an artificial alteration and those which didn’t. Additional measurements on the properties of the paint systems are made.
