Andreas Buder: Development of an interactive CD-ROM on the analysis of pigments, with particular consideration of polarization microscopy. Back

Overview:
Abstract: The work consists of two parts: a CD-ROM and a documentation record, the latter outlining the works basic approach, its rationale and its implementation. The thesis, created at the Institute of Conservation, attempts to present a new way of managing and communicating specialist knowledge. Not unlike the approach of the well-known series "Artists Pigments", the work interrelates information on historical materials with materials analysis. Due to its specific features, the CD-ROM is a medium particularly suited to this purpose. The CD presents the properties of pigments as keys to their qualitative and analytical classification. Emphasis has been given to polarization microscopy, briefly introduced in a section of its own. The pigments have been listed in a database-like compilation. A simple index card system enables the user to trace the respective pigments by navigating between the indices Description and Application, Polarization Microscopy, Microchemistry and Infrared Spectroscopy. Multimedia production in this special field mostly comprises video sequences, apart from various images and graphics. By means of videos, pigment traits of analytical importance can be demonstrated in a considerably more precise and understandable way than by way of long-winded descriptions.
