Overview:

Abstract: Many parishes still have a stock of historical paraments, for which to preserve a proper treatment is essential. With particular reference to the objects of the catholic church St. John the Baptist in Cologne, guidelines for inventory, storage and care of sacred textiles are described. For the collection’s inventory a form has been deviced to allow an overview of the existing stock as well as its condition and therefore serves as a representative basis for later conservation or restoration proposals. In addition, the unique problem of soot-covered textiles is discussed as many of the paraments have suffered damage from fires at the church in the past decades, resulting in a heavy deposition of soot and a need for cleaning. With focus on the limited budget of the parishes, inexpensive as well as efficient methods of handling and storage are explored.
