Overview:

Abstract: A crucifixion scene from the 18th century, in possession of the Munich city museum since 1935, is a carved wooden, small format artifact in the style of the late Rococo. This work of art has not previously been mentioned in the literature. The only known documents are the inventory notes and the index card of the museum. The main purpose of this thesis is to describe the design concept and to determine and document deployed techniques as well as used materials through observation and scientific analysis. It also details changes to the artifact, describes its current condition, presents a restoration concept and contains a photographic documentation. The insights about the art-historical classification, iconography and function are stated in this thesis. The work serves as a contribution to the scientific study of small format wood carvings.
