Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the painting technique of the artist Günther Uecker and with the materials he used in his nail pictures. In addition, the restoring methods applied to date are critically discussed and new aspects are introduced. After giving a review of the artist’s life and his work, the author concentrates on the specific meaning of nails as a sculptural means of expression. A description of painting materials and their use in the artistic process follows. Finally, an overview of specific damages and problems of the paintings is given. Various possible methods of restoring will be proposed. The thesis is based on an interview with the artist, in which he comments the aging and the restoring methods of his work.
