Abstract: Retardation and strain (CRE) measurements on ancient samples were used to investigate their response to forces due to their weight. The response of the tapestry could very well be classified allowing a prediction of critical areas. It could be shown that in practice forces are of no risc if the tapestry is intact. Optical measurements were used to investigate the deformation of large tapestries. All measurements showed that colour boundaries play the most important role and that they are stabilized by the surrounding „matrix“ in large tapisery. The methods have also been tested as long-term surveillance tools in exhibitions. The determination of friction coefficients between different materials allowed to prove the positive effect of an inclined display. Even a complete relief of force can be achieved by choosing the proper materials and geometries.
