Carolin Vogt: Standardized test methods to determine the optical and mechanical properties of consolidants for painting conservation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Many series of tests to determine appropriate optical and mechanical properties of consolidants can be made by conservators themselves, especially with the assistance of good laboratory facilities. These kinds of tests and their problems are discussed in detail in this paper. Sources of error and practical hints for their application are put forward. The main part of the paper gives a broad overview of theoretically utilizable standardized test methods. These methods were primarily collected from various branches of industry and material-testing institutions. The pros and cons for testing consolidants are thoroughly described. Three of these methods were put to the test, revealing the possibilities and limitations of partly modified standardized tests for use in the field of conservation.
