Ulrike Fuchsberger: “Scene from the Thirty Years’ War“ by Sebastian Vrancx (1573-1647) from Kremsmünster Abbey: Examination and Conservation of a Wooden Panel Painting, Construction of a Glueing Apparatus and Supporting Frame Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: During previous conservation treatment, the 17th-century panel painting had been stabilised with two horizontal struts, which over time have caused deformations, warping, cracks and rifts in the picture support. As part of a new preservation treatment the old repairs were removed; the struts were detatched in a bed of sand, which self-adjusted to the deformation of the support. A specially-developed
adhesive table as well as other special tools for carrying out the procedure are described. A combination support and frame-construction will enable the wood panel to “move” in reaction to the environmental climate.
