Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Numerous marble objects are planned for the re-installation of the collection of the Kunstkammer at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna scheduled to reopen in 2008. A total of 48 busts, reliefs and sculptures are recorded in a detailed conservational survey which is the basis of this thesis. In a second step both data and results are examined and analysed. Thus differently-defined states of preservation enable the specification of different degrees of restoration requirements. After a thorough discussion of soiling, cleaning and patina, historical methods and current cleaning techniques on marble surfaces in museum collections are discussed. The thesis’ practical aspect involves the evaluation of a test series to find suitable cleaning methods. Exemplary cleaning performance is carried out on two selected objects.
