Overview:

Abstract: This paper describes the conservation of a type-bar writing machine with a type-basket manufactured in 1896 belonging to the „Deutsche Technikmuseum Berlin“. Typewriters like this were used mainly at administration and law offices. Frister & Rossmann, a Berlin Company which originally produced sewing machines, used the American typewriter CALIGRAPH as a model for their production of writing machines with a type-basket. The object of conservation is considered to be one of the first German type-bar writing machines of ist time, thus being technically and historically interesting at the same time. This paper focuses on material analyses for the process of conservation and measures developed therefrom.
