Sabine Bendfeldt: Methods of Rejoining Panel Paintings Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: A panel of the size 186 cm x 86 cm and a thickness of only 1 cm was opened in all joints. In addition, the panel was broken at the groove of the lower arris fillet. One cause for this damage was the intense destruction of the wood by woodworms. The panel consisted of 18 different pieces.
The aim of the working was the joining and stabilization of the breaking as a prerequisite for the gluing
of the individual boards and the presentation of the painting. The stabilization was planned to happen in
the wood of the boards itself in order to maintain the original back as far as possible. Before stabilization, the wood had been strengthened and the lost parts had been replaced with the help of small wooden rods.
The theoretical part gives a survey of the gluing instruments which were presented in different sources. It is also about historical methods of working and the theoretical aspects of gluing wood.
