Overview:

Abstract: This paper offers a documentation and evaluation of the grave clothes of Bishop Ogerius de Conflens († 1441) from a textile technological point of view. Firstly, the basis for such a documentation is worked out with reference to comparable examples in the relevant literature and a short overview is given of the kind of garments found in Bishops graves and reasons for their preservation. Then follows a catalogue of all textile components of Bishop Ogerius’ grave, complemented by a separate catalogue with technical analyses of each fabric. In some cases reconstructions of the weaving structure or pattern are provided. The textile components of the grave and their state at the time of the burial are also discussed. Finally, a concept is added, dealing with the storage of the today only fragmentary remains of the grave clothes which are presently kept in the storage area of the Historisches Museum Basel.
