Overview:

Abstract: The portrait depicts the child Leopold Hermann Anthon, count of the family of Lippe, on his deathbed. It was painted by the Hamburger artist Hans Hinrich Rundt around 1701. The painting was examined on the grounds of art history and cultural history. Its paint layers were technologically analysed as well as its earlier treatment and current condition studied. Under consideration of the portrait’s restoration a treatment plan was conceptualised, focusing especially on conservation. The works undertaken were the consolidation of the painting’s surface, varnish and overpaint removal, as well as infilling, structuring and retouching before the application of a new coating. All measures were implemented in some test areas.
