Overview:

Abstract: Based on an example of a folding screen with biblical pictures on canvas a techonological investigation and their results are presented, focusing on the diffrent base materials, the paint layer on frame structure and paint layers of front and back of folding screen. Beside generally bad conservation-conditions the investigated screen shows a distinctive fire damage. Therefore a main focus of the work is the theoretical and practical analysis of the problems resulting of the fire damage. In the context of a condition recording, damages are documented, especially taking into account the fire damaged and highly polluted paint layer. In a conservation-concept measures for the maintenance of the screen are recommended. Among others the consolidation of the fire damaged paint layer and surface-cleaning are discussed.
