Martina Kerkhoff: The „Goldene Wunder“ of the Dortmund Petrichurch – Technological examination of the carved altarpiece and the wood carvings Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: In 1521, the former Franciscan cloister in Dortmund ordered the carved altarpiece of the
Dortmund Petrichurch from the picture wood carver Jan Wraghe and the painter Adrian van
Overbeck in Antwerp.
This thesis concentrates on the completely open condition of the altarpiece with its 30 scenes
adorned with sculptures and reliefs. By the technological examination of the construktion the
altarpiece is examined for orginality and special features of the construction. In this context it is
also necessary to look at the history of the altarpiece in order to be able to identify and explain
occurring changes. The figures of the altarpiece are scrutinized for their technical working
process. In addition, the thesis examines whether two carved Antwerp figures which can be
found in the Dortmund Petrichurch, originally belonged to the altarpiece.
