Overview:

Abstract: The main focus of the thesis is the development of a process to remove an aged
Polyvinylacetat-coating from a cycle of paintings by Ernst Pasqual Jordan and Richard
Schlösser from 1914 in the town council hall in Buxtehude, Germany. Through changes due to
ageing the thickly applied, shiny aqueos PVAC-emulsion yellowed and went grey. As a result the
typical visual impression of a gluebonded layer of paint on a fibrous, tightly woven canvas is
gone. The removal of the soluble and/or swollen synthetic resin from the highly absorbent
canvas was achieved through a combination of direct hoovering with a vacuum pump and a
special post treatment of the surface.
