The paper considers the challenges of restoring sgraffiti in Belgium via the case study of a Brussels house which is emblematic of the Art Nouveau period: the Hotel Ciamberlani designed by the architect Paul Hankar (1897).
Following a quick review of the sgraffito styles in Brussels around 1900, the paper describes the different stages of restoration in chronological order while illustrating key critical questions and the choices taken. The work commenced with the conservation of the plaster layers and the treatment of gaps in the mortar. Next, the question was raised about the restitution of the polychromy of which several traces were left over. Interpreting the monochrome archive photographs which were associated with projects by the known artist decorators and which were found in private collections, gave enough information about the original appearance of the sgraffito to enable this to be restituted in color.
The committee of experts charged with the task of supervising the project decided on the basis of the available documentation to restitute the initial image of the sgraffito, which allowed the facade to be viewed again as a whole. It was therefore necessary to understand how to paint the flat and the modeled areas, how to reduce the brilliance of the gold-leaf and to choose a durable and weatherproof system of painting. This process also had to take into consideration the aging of old and new materials. The collaboration of several specialists has made this restoration very exciting.
