The Consolidation of severely deteriorated wood serving a significant structural function does not reach an adequate strengthening effect when applying the usual thermoplastic resins. Epoxy resins can be an alternative. However, there are several problems reported with the use of epoxies which seem to reduce their advantages in comparison with other consolidants. A choice of solventfree epoxy resins, hardeners, reactive diluents and flexibilizers is made, considered as suitable according to their chemical structure and properties. The actual suitability for conservation is examined in various tests, focusing on the rise of temperature during the exothermic reaction, the ability to penetrate into wood and bending- and compression strength of consolidated samples.
