Zusammenfassung: This paper concerns the conservation of a gilt leather wallhanging which is part of the tapestry within the chapel of Castle Veitshöchheim. At first the paper gives an overview on the history and production of such gilt leather wallhangings in general, followed by an extensive documentation of the object itself. Provenance, date, technological construction and the amount of damage are described in detail. The main problem to deal with is a previous leather treatment using wax and a variety of grease leaving a dried out leather structure, heavy darkening and a sticky condition on the verso of the object. A comprehensive series of samples examining the degreasing of leather will be carried out to enable the development of a new and suitable conservation treatment. The results are then converted into practice using a chart analysis of a sample diagram as (one) part of the entire conservation concept. Concluding with the consideration of different criteria to be fulfilled, new mounting method will be developed to install the object within the chapel of the castle.
