Zusammenfassung: In this thesis charcoal and pastel drawings, as the drawings with the least adhesive force between pictorial medium and paper surface, are defined as drawings with vulnerable surfaces. Their art historical use, production process and material characteristics are described as well as their adhesive forces physically explained and compared to the adhesive characteristics of similar drawing techniques.
Based on the material characteristics of drawings with vulnerable surfaces and current literature their specific sources of damage and their storage and presentation requirements are presented. Major importance is attached to the mounting conditions. Conservation mounting minimises direct handling as well as mechanical stress and assures protection from chemical and physical sources of damage. Furthermore proven mounting techniques are presented and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. In this context the considerations and tests before mounting and the mounting of two particularly friable pastel drawings at the Städelmuseum Frankfurt are documented as a case study.
The thesis ends with an assistance and a bibliography. They should provide quick access to information about storage and presentation of drawings with vulnerable surfaces for conservators in museums, archives and collections.
