Zusammenfassung: The founding of the „Experiment Straßenkunstprogramm Hannover“ in August 1970 created wide public attention for public art, far beyond the city of Hanover. Demands for aphorisms such as “Democratisation of Art” launched controversial discussions, which continue until the present day.
However, too often these works of art became neglected over the years, turning them into “public nuisances” – event though they had been created to meet not only the demands of the space surrounding them as well as the idea of art in general.
This thesis closes a gap in the reflection of how to deal with public art, using the restoration of several works of art from Hanover as examples. The sometimes unconventional measures taken in the care and maintenance of these works of art gave rise to formulate general recommendations for measures of conservation. In this, close attention has been paid to the existing physical conditions of the site, material-specific, ethical and aesthetical criteria as well as legal aspects and criteria of the preservation of cultural heritage.
