Zusammenfassung: The present paper introduces the non-destructive ATP-measuring method in form of a standardized rapid diagnostic test, which can be easily carried out. Due to this rapid diagnostic test, it is possible to recognize microbial activity on archive and library property at an early stage.
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the chemically stored energy supply, which can be found in all living cells. The reproduction of cells is always accompanied by high metabolism activity in which ATP is generated. Therefore, the ATP content of a sample can indicate the activity of the microorganisms and the hygiene status of a surface.
Until now, the ATP-measuring method for archive and library property has only seldom been used, although in contrast to the conventional test procedures, only a prefabricated test tube and a measuring instrument are required.
In order to find out if the ATP-measurement at archive and library property can be used as suitable instrument to deliver proof of microbial activity, measurements at books was carried out at various locations with different storage and climate conditions. Furthermore, this paper deals theoretically with the elements, which influence measurements on dry surfaces and measurements of liquidity.
The reduction of humidity is a significant instrument to dam up the growth and reproduction of microorganisms. In laboratory, tests with spiked samples were carried out in which a reduction of humidity by a slow dehydration was simulated. The aim was to find out how free ATP in a solution and bound in a fungus is catabolized while dehydrating.
