Zusammenfassung: The task of this project was to investigate the suitability of Magnet resonance imaging (MRI) for the destruction free examination of blocked prints on paper using theoretical and experimental methods. The technical and physical background is described in detail and the benefits and limitations of this method regarding the suitability and applicability for investigating blocked prints on paper are discussed. Experiments using various sam pies as well as a blocked book found in a grave in the cathedral in Zeitz/ Germany demonstrated that it is in principal possible to exmine blocked paper prints using MRI. The soaking of the paper with a proton releasing fluid was found to be the principal requirement for a successful imaging. Further it was shown that para magnetic supplements in the paper inhibit or completely prohibit a successful reconstruction of the print. Technical deficits are currently restricting the applicability of MRI in the restoration of paper.
