Zusammenfassung: This study deals with two of the medieval wall paintings in St. Nicolai (partly a ruin) at Gardelegen/ Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The paintings in the choir are dated in the first half of the 15th century. The condition of the fourteen saints depends on their localisation in the choir. The paintings were uncovered, restored and reconstructed in the 1940s and show damages in piaster and painting layer, which are due to structural changes on the walls, revisions of the layers, infiltration of water and pollution by salts. A test area each was made for the conservation of piaster and painting layer. The other wall painting is situated today on the fagade of the west-tower in the former nave. The fragments of the paintings, which show two saints, are dated in 1531. These paintings were uncovered and reconstructed in the 1940s. Since the bombing in World War II they have been exposed to the outdoor weathering. The last conservation treatment in 1961/62 included the use of plastic. The leading causes of the damages (Iargely losses of piaster and reduced binder in the painting layer) are the salt pollution due to outdoor weathering and the use of plastics in the hollow areas between piaster and wall. An emergency conservation for the painting of St. Christopher was carried out.
For both paintings a concept for conservation of piaster and painting layer is discussed on the basis of conservational findings. In addition, proposals are made for presentation of the wall paintings in connection with the future use of St. Nicolai as venue.
