Zusammenfassung: The microbial colonization upon and beneath the surface of listed objects and the thereof resulting often severe damage has a more and more deep impact to the work of conservators.
For that reason, the need for effective counteractions increases, including the necessity for less toxic ingredients than e. g. biocides. These are still often used despite their heavy side effects on humans as well as the environment because of a lack of alternatives.
Several times, the exposure of different objects to UV light has been tested. In spite of some limitations, these experiments were rather successful.
This work shall serve the ongoing researches with a supplementary contribution concerning the effecticity of UV-C-irradiation to microbial exposure to mural surfaces, illustrating the possibility of decreasing the growth of micro-organisms by UV light before and after a necessary conservating action to reduce mural salts and the linked humidity rate.
Chosen object for this study is the cellar room of the highschool building at Kaiserstr. 19 (Hildesheim). After an additional raise of humidity, there was a high probability of an immense increase of the microbial growth rate in this room. It was planned to reduce this by exposure to UV-C light.
Besides, adding silver ions into the compress material was tested for a possible minimizing effect to the growth of micro-organisms.
