Zusammenfassung: As the lacquer technology of the twentieth century has not been greatly researched, the subject of discussion here will be its development between the end of the 1940s and the end of the 1960s, using the furniture manufacturer Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau as an example. Since the turn of the century, the company had been blazing the trail in Ger-many with regard to design and production. The processing and composition of the lac-quers was determined by evaluating source materials and investigating lacquer coatings from 30 pieces of furniture. Instrumental analysis was performed with FT-IR and Py-GC/MS. The pieces of furniture were primarily found to have been treated with cellulo-se nitrate lacquers, which were commonly used back then. Although the company was part of the furniture industry, the surface treatments in series production were long do-minated by manual application techniques. In spite of this, Deutsche Werkstätten intro-duced new technologies where possible.
