Zusammenfassung: Ready-made power cords are rarely mentioned in conservation literature, nor are they recognized as part of a work of art. Functionality dominating over historical value in the common perception, treatments bear closer resemblance to repairs than conservation activities. Looking at power cords from the former GDR methods to preserve these wires made of plasticized PVC, rubber, polyester, polyamide, phenol- and melamine-formaldehyde-resin as well as metal and cotton are outlined. Safety legislation such as DIN VDE 0701-0702 which call for replacement of a damaged cord will be described. These lead to the dilemma debate of preserving and using power cords. were developed for the organization, survey, installation, monitoring as well as the promotion of outdoor sculptures in Cologne.
