Zusammenfassung: The silk wall covering of the blue drawing room at Wildenfels castle is decorated with a dense, probably oriental, tambour frame embroidery with repeating depictions of niche motifs which contain vases with bouquets of flowers. The panels display significant mechanical damage, paint splashes from repeated painting of the ceiling; and, in parts, heavy soot deposits which both affect the legibility and seal the surface. After the condition recording, an extensive investigation was undertaken into the handling of soot-damaged textiles as well as cleaning tests on dummies. Given the limited possibilities for cleaning silk in combination with silver and since the removal of soot requires some mechanical action, only specific methods were tested. On the basis of these results, and to assess their transferability, further tests were carried out on small areas of the original.
