Zusammenfassung: Candles can be a source of deterioration for works of art because they have soot-, heat- and light - generating qualities. The influence of these qualities on objects of art and cultural assets is to be examined, with a special focus on soot - generation. The composition of candle emissions and the impact of other sources of harm were the focus of several studies conducted by different institutes. So far there has been no study from a conservational point of view. The development of the theoretical principles of a candle and its combustion establishes an access to the problem at hand. Analyses of scientific studies are combined with a series of tests on aforementioned parameters of damage. Good and pure quality of the raw candle materials, choice of suitable locations as well as observance of favourable conditions during the combustion process are crucial in minimizing the damage potential. Based on these factors, there is a variety of options for realizing prevention techniques. The presence of further sources of harm inside a church interior prevents an accurate assessment of the damage potential of candles.
