Zusammenfassung: In the framework of this master thesis the polymers polyvinyl acetate and polymethylmethacrylat have been investigated on their degradation properties and their effect on the material they are laid on. The object of investigation was the mural painting in the apse of the Stiftskirche St. Pankratius in Hamersleben, Saxony-Anhalt. The polymers have been
degradated under humid conditions, which lead to damages in the mortar structure and on the painted layer of the mural painting.
The damaged mural painting, together with the degradated polymer layer, have been investigated
in situ, specifically on physical changes, with the following methods: ultraviolet lightning, thin cross-sections under ultraviolet lightning, masurement of color with the spectral photometer Spectro-color , produced by Dr. Lange, the capillary water reception with the Mirowski method and cleaning tests with certain solvents.
As an investigation method ex situ, specimen were built, to imitate the damages via accelerated aging.
The aim of the thesis was to be able to assess the damage potential of the polymers on the object and to contribute to the clarification of the degradation properties of synthetic polymers in the specific case of porous mural paintings.
