Zusammenfassung: The primary aim of the project is to develop an adequate concept of non-contact recording of extended and complex (mainly painted) rock art sites and the investigations of their pigments, stone, and crusts by means of modern digital and /or combined methods. The study case is the „Cave of beasts“ („Wadi Sura II“), one of the largest Saharan rock art shelters with regard to the number more than 8,000 figures painted. The present work presents an overview through the development of different methods of rock art recording, and discusses their value for the present application in the Wadi Sura II shelter. Assessment and application of methods and technology in Wadi Sura II are defined by the extreme desert conditions, and the logistically relatively short working periods in the field. Due to the latter, field recording methods should provide a complete and high quality imagery for subsequent off-site computer-aided analysis of the figures. Field methods applied include 3D laser scanning combined with extreme high resolution photography.
