Zusammenfassung: St. John ́s Church in Bretleben in the federal state of Thuringia/Germany was build in 1896/97. The church was designed by August Dinklage in an eclectic style. His design-concept did also include the interior and the stained glass windows.
The seven historic windows of the church where executed by the little-known Berlin-based stained glass studio of J.C. Spinn. As draftsman-designer for the windows the then young painter August
Oetken had been employed.
During the execution of this master thesis, art historical and archival research concerning the
windows has been undertaken. Furthermore, the stained glass panels, removed and put into storage
in 2006, have been sighted and examined. The results did show that the poor state in which the
panels are in, goes back to damages resulting from imperfection in the painting process, historic
influences and actual damage mechanisms.
The conservation proposal provides the basis for the future conservation and restoration work on the
panels. Apart from methods concerning the protection and preservation, a major part of this thesis discusses adequate possibilities of closing gaps of missing glassin the panels. An exemplary
conservation was carried out on the sample panel 2c out of the window nIII.
St. John’s Church suffers, like many German village churches, from demographic changes. Various
options for a different use of the church are also listed.
