Zusammenfassung: The existence of a high number of medieval historic buildings in Lübeck and the close proximity to two major gypsum deposits suggest a high likelihood of high temperature gypsum plaster (HTGP) occurring as a basis of numerous architectural elements. These circumstances, as well as the insufficient documentation of its application give rise to an initial investigation of the application of HTGP in the area of Lübeck. The survey of the current state of research as well as the determination and categorisation of the concerning objects and their state of preservation are crucial parts of the investigations. Here, the extraction of samples on selected architectural elements is the essential basis for the analysis and comparison of relevant material properties. The selection of the elements is based on criteria which had been determined in advance. Finally, a combined microscopical analyses of polished surfaces and thin sections provides the basis for the examination of relevant material properties. This includes the identification of the binding agent, the registration of the single components of the mortar and a comparison of the different samples.
