Zusammenfassung: Tracing paper is a common material in archives where it can usually be found in the form of maps, architectural drawings and carbon copies.
Usage, but also conservation and restoration are meeting new challenges in terms of the objects often large format, fragility and vast amount of multiple folds.
Exemplary cases of archival tracing paper will be used to examine the issue of surface cleaning, which is almost always one of the first steps in paper conservation. Different material qualities of tracing paper as well as the most common causes for soiling will be discussed with references to the respective literature.
Methods of manual cleaning are often made difficult to be executed steadily and evenly, especially when the objects in question are very large, folded or damaged.
This thesis examines different methods of manual surface cleaning, concentrating especially on residue-free methods.
Criteria for the examinations are evenness of cleaned areas, quality of cleaning, handling and time needed for cleaning.
Recommendations concerning the surface cleaning of folded and fragile tracing paper are given on the basis of these examinations.
