Zusammenfassung: The sandstone portal of the former cloister church Frauenrauch is partially afflicted with damage in form of surface-parallel casings in front of softened zones or else crevices, which are located mainly in the decorative parts made of gray-beige sandstone. In order to curb the damage, drastic measures for anchoring and filling the casings are absolutely necessary in addition to basic structural fortification. To consolidate the heavily corroded portal blocks, injection grouts and repair mortars based on ethyl silicate (TEOS) or silica sol were tested.
By means of petrografic assessments, obtained structural parameters, as well as humidity statistics of the corroded natural stone in comparison to reference stone, it was possible to reduce the variance. Custom-made and standard materials have been compared to the original stone and have been benchmarked against test units and model components according to catalogued requirements.
