Zusammenfassung: The painting on a wooden panel „Der Schmerzensmann“ from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder comes from the Great Gallery of Paintings of the Castle Ehrenburg in Coburg. Its origin is dated to the time around 1540. The special feature about this work is that its paint surface was treated with Gum Elemi by the restorer Dr. Büttner-Pfänner zu Thal around 1900. On the 28th of May 2001 the painting was taken to the conservation studios of the Bavarian Administration of Public Castles, Gardens and Lakes. The deformation of the panel and lifting paint led to a detailed examination of the original material and other damages, which have occurred over time. For this project the panel painting was examined in detail and its condition was established. With the help of scientific examination it was possible to gain new knowledge about the structure of the painting, the original material used and to specify the various restorations. Extensive measurements of the climate in the exhibition room were used as a basis for the development of a conservation proposal. It became clear that further damage on the painting could only be avoided by reducing the influence of the climate changes in the gallery.
