Zusammenfassung: The subject of this diploma study is the library in Schloss Babelsberg, Potsdam. The castle was the summer residence from 1835 to 1888 of prince Wilhelm, who later became emperor Wilhelm I, and his wife, the empress Augusta. The castle, built in the Gothic Revival style and designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was built in two stages. The first part of the castle was built in 1834 to 1835. In 1844 the second period of building began under the supervision of Ludwig Persius. After his death in 1845, Johann Heinrich Strack and Martin Gottgetreu continued the building and finished it in 1849. The library is a result of the second period of building, in which two rooms were combined into one. Strack also designed the decoration of the library. Because the original state of the library will be restored, a restoration investigation was made, which included all surfaces of the library. The damage and its causes were also investigated. The investigations included a search for the original furnishings. With the results about the extent and the state of the original surfaces, suggestions for conservation and restoration are offered.
