The early, to the 12th century dated, painted wooden ceilings of the gong-ma temple, part of the temple complex in Nako, Himachal Pradesh, Indien, has been investigated and a concept for the conservation and restoration has been defined. The central research has been carried out on the analysis of the used painting materials, the historical technique of the wooden ceiling construction, and the reconstruction of the original painting technique, executed on a clay containing ground. In the frame work of the scientific investigation it was possible to define original and later added panels. The goal was the development of a concept for the conservation and restoration of the painted wooden ceiling, where a technique for the consolidation and cleaning of the soiled, mate and powdery painting layer had to be developed.
