Katja Kleindienst: The conservation and restoration of the canvas paintings "Portrait of the Book Printing Press Owner Benjamin Vogt" and "Portrait of the Forester C.G. Prasse". Both paintings date from 1840 and come from the collection of the Stadtmuseum Zittau Zurück

Zusammenfassung: Both paintings show parallels in terms of age, size, technique and previous restorations. However the symptoms of damage differ. "Vogt" has a stable glue lining that induces small wavelike buckling on the face of the painting. The second major problem is a starkly disfiguring layer of dirt occuring between two layers of varnish. In the case of "Prasse", by contrast, the starch glue lining has largely degraded and the support shows severe deformation. The painting has no tacking edges and appears dirty and yellowed.
The restoration centers itself around the lining removal of both paintings and the flattening of the
deformations on the working stretcher through tension, warmth and pressure in various working stages.
In the case of "Prasse", tacking edges are adhered and the varnish is thinned. With "Vogt", the layer of dirt is removed, a small tear is mended and paint losses are retouched. Before the flattening of a painting several treatments can proove necessary. For these it is essential that a working support is constructed.
This is more often the case in panel painting and relief restorations. It is mostly from this field that we have examples of this method, which are usually based on plaster or silicon casts. The working support that is here developed is customised for the special needs of the lining removal of the painting "Portait of C.G. Prasse". The result is a form of plaster and polystyrene. This work discusses the problems of binding
agents, fillers and protective layers between the painting surface and the working support, as well as the technical realisation of the cast.
