Zusammenfassung: The state of preservation of the Biedermeier painting “Hunters in the Mountains” from the Stadt- und Bergbaumuseum Freiberg was impaired by two impregnations with shellac and wax-resin, numerous
paint losses and compressions, canvas tears and deformations as well as surface dirt. The treatment
included the thread by thread mending of the tears, the removal of a wax-resin coat on the paint surface, and the mechanical reduction and final extraction of the wax resin compound from the canvas support, employing solvents, raised temperatures and a polyester fleece mat as a compress.
An especially constructed auxiliary stretcher with gliding nailing points was used to stretch the painting.
Lifted paint areas were then levelled and consolidated.
The surface dirt was removed and paint losses were filled with a Beva-filler.
The first coat of retouche was carried out with acrylic paint. An intermediate varnish based on a natural resin was applied to the painting, before the retouche was completed with resin-oil colours.
