Zusammenfassung: The practical component of the diploma thesis concentrates on the examination, conservation and
restoration of the painting „View of the Jesuit Settlement in Ebersberg“ from the collection of the
Bavarian National Museum. The poor state of the painting is a result of war damage and long-term
storage in detrimental environmental conditions. Upon receival, the painting was no longer stretched,
had numerous severe creases and folds, and large portions of the paint layers were lifting or had been lost. The unvarnished surface was also heavily soiled. The most important steps in the treatment included dhesive tear repair, the insertion of a large inlay in the upper left corner, the consolidation of the paint layers using JUN Funori, flattening the deformations, cleaning the front and back sides, adding new tacking edges, re-stretching on a keyed stretcher, and the colouring of the inlay in the upper left corner to blend in with the surrounding fabric. Keeping in mind the fragmentary condition and its value, more as a historical record than as a work of art, only a few losses in the paint layer were filled and inpainted. The
theoretical component explores the effect on which the method of creating a starch paste-sturgeon glue
mixture has on the homogeneity, mixing, barrier-forming and penetrating nature of the glue-paste.
