Zusammenfassung: The polychrome Fijian curtain used as a room partition is part of the collection of the
Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne. The object with two identical front sides is made of
barkcloth of the paper mulberry- tree. By manufacture and decoration it can be classified as a
noble Fijian Gatu Vakaviti. The thesis' aim is to examine the object and to develop a conservation concept for damages like numerous tears and holes, deformations, water stains and delaminations. In addition the lining caused more tears and brittleness of the barkcloth.
Conservation treatment includes e.g. the removing of patches, stabilisation of tears and holes
with Japanese tissue paper and Plextol D 360/Plextol D 498 and securing the paint layer with
Methocel. As a preventive measure against new folds and creases caused in storage a new
storage-roll was made of lightweight papier-mâché.
