Abstract: The wall painting in the choir of the St. Lorenz Church of Schöningen was painted in a distemper between the years 1901 and 1904 by A. Quensen, a decorative painter from Brunswick, Lower Saxony.
The aim of this diploma thesis was to evaluate the right materials and techniques for the conservation and presentation of the wall painting since the condition of the wall painting is serious. A survey of the condition was made and the deterioration mechanisms were discussed. One of the main themes was to test different grouts to consolidate and to backfill cavities. Different injection mortars were tested: dispersed hydrated lime mortars were compared with regular hydrated lime mortars and a mortar based on silica-ethyl ester. Various methods were tested in situ to consolidate the extremely damaged paint layers of the wall painting. On selected test areas the use of dispersed hydrated lime mortars in combination and in comparison with ethyl ester of polysilic acid mortars were examined.
In addition, the effectiveness of gels was tested to reduce salt efflorescence and superficial dirt. The use of organic conservation materials and the effect of biocides were assessed because there is a potential microbial degradation of organic binders in wall paintings, as used in distemper.
