Overview:

Abstract: This paper deals with the neoromanic retabel fragment of the former high altar of St. Heribert in Cologne-Deutz. The retabel in question was created by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg in 1907. The paper briefly mentions the workshops of christian art which were typical for this period, and a short biography of the author is given. The majority of the paper describes the techniques used and the condition of the fragment. A very special feature, due to their rarity today, are the glass pictures which portray the Evangelists. Based on the findings of this analysis a concept for conservation and restoration has been developed, which was carried out on a sample area of the retabel.
