Abstract: The board member’s table of the Carnival Association “Kölsche Funke rut-wieß vun 1823 e.V.” is a one-of-a-kind piece of Cologne folk art. The tabletop is protected with a glass plate and has a painted wood mosaic finish which was created by Max Ostenkötter in 1931. It shows scenes from the life of the cities servicemen in a close iconographic relationship to the Association as it is today. As the table is still in everyday use it shows typically expected marks like scratches and liquid damage caused by beverages. Particularly, the red coloured areas appear severely bleached out. So the main concerns are how to handle the colour loss and how to improve the surface protection. The development of a concept incorporating the Decision-Making-Model of the Foundation of Modern Art (1999) comprises of a translucent retouch of the red coloured areas as well as protecting the tabletop using a new glass plate construction.
