Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This thesis documents the conservation of the breast plates of two warrior vests from the mountain of Alor, Indonesia. The breast plates are made from various organic materials, richly ornamented with boar tusks, which show varying stages of deterioration. The cultural background of the warrior vests is described as well as construction, composition and structure of teeth. Possible causes of the deterioration are explained and methods for treating and preventing damage are examined. The conservation treatment includes surface cleaning of the breast plates, reshaping of the plant fibers and water buffalo skin, stabilization of loose pieces of tooth enamel and reshaping the tusks in order to adhere them.
