Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis focuses on the mural and vault paintings, dated to the 15th century, in the St. Moritz church in Almstedt.
The wall paintings have been exposed and restored in 1959. The condition of the paintings is characterized by endangered areas of plaster primary in the pedestal zone, discolouration of sodium silicate layers, as well as a massive growing of microorganisms in upper areas of the walls.
The damage is caused by soluble salts, intense fluctuations of the climate and incompatible materials used in 1959.
A conservation concept, based on several analyses and treatment trials, has been developed.
Finally, the conservation concept was carried out in a sample area of the painting.
