Overview:

Abstract: The object of this bachelor thesis is the study of various wrapping materials used for packing objects of art and cultural value, thereby examining the difference between packaging said items for transport or for long-term storage purposes. The main focus of this thesis will be the testing and examination of various types of paper, non-woven fabrics and bubble wrap.
It will begin with an introduction of each group of material, the component substances and production processes thereof, the presentation and illustration of the material tests carried out, and a list of the possibilities and restrictions for each of the existing test methods. The choice of materials to be tested is based on a survey by restorers in Germany as well as on specialised literature.
The thesis concludes with an evaluation of the conducted tests and a summary of the test results, supplemented by manufacturers' data. Lastly, the different material groups will be evaluated against each other and practical advice given on packaging problems.
